OK, this is just shameful… I knew I had a draft blog post (about business books I’d read) lurking in the background, but when I went to refer to it I found this one which I drafted back in August 2017. I have no idea why I didn’t post it at the time, it seems pretty finished to me and I would like to have a record of this somewhere, so for the sake of completeness here it is now. Continue reading

Volunteers – the el399 guide

I recently added another strand of volunteering to my current batch of activities, and this prompted me to think again about the whole process of recruiting and managing volunteers.

I should perhaps say at this point that I am not in favour of gutting library services and replacing professional library staff with untrained persons, however well-meaning they may be. However, in the historical/cultural sector appropriately-skilled volunteers are enormously valuable in augmenting the work of paid staff, and I have experienced the benefits of this as both an employee and a volunteer. I’ve just been adding my 2013 CPD activities to my portfolio space on the CILIP VLE, and I was pleased to note that I racked up 37 hours. This doesn’t take into account a couple of events which I didn’t write up and don’t remember enough about now; at least 4 hours reading ILIG Focus and 12 hours reading Update, which I didn’t log (though I may this year); plus easily another 20+ hours (also not logged) of SLA committee meetings and associated tasks – and I thought it had been a fairly quiet year on the CPD front! I have been in my new volunteer job for a little over a month now, and this seems like a good time for some reflection on how things are going so far. Regular readers may recall that I visited the Morgan Library back in June, and was completely blown away by the small part of the collection that was on display. T wondered if they had a volunteer programme that I could apply to, and I was delighted to discover that not only do they welcome qualified volunteers but that they were actually looking for someone to work in the reading room.

Thing 22 – Volunteering

I volunteered in a charity shop one summer during my undergraduate degree which served to fill up some time in a useful way (I had a paid job too but that was evening bar work, so I had plenty of time to spare and no money to do anything interesting with it!). I enjoyed my time there but I didn’t gain a huge amount of new experience, and it only featured on my CV briefly. As far as I can remember the shop manager was paid but the rest of the staff were all volunteers. Library-wise, although I never did this myself I’m sure that relevant volunteering can be a useful way to get experience at the start of a career, especially if you’re not 100% sure if the job is for you.
