Libraries, the universe and everything

It’s not often I find myself struggling for words, but I’m really not sure what to write about this year’s SLA conference, which is odd because I had an excellent time. Baltimore was my fifth consecutive attendance, so I have a lot of friends to catch up with, I’ve learned to enjoy chatting with our exhibitors about their products, and being on SLA’s board of directors adds an extra dimension to it all. I’ve even got a bit better at self-care, at long last – I managed to eat a hot meal every day, and even took a little time out to get some much-needed sunshine and fresh air (you have no idea how much of an achievement this is for me…!).

SLA Leadership Symposium 2018

At last I’ve managed to find the time to write about our Leadership Symposium, which took place at the end of last month (January 28-30) in New Orleans. This was exciting to me for a number of reasons, not least of all being that it was my first visit to a city I’ve wanted to experience for ages (and I wrote about that side of it over on my other blog). However, the main source of delight was that this event has been absent from the SLA calendar since 2015, and it was a huge privilege to be a part of the team responsible for bringing it back. (I attended the event in 2015, and found it a tremendous experience, although I’m sad to discover that I appear to have neglected to write about it here.)

A Janus moment

In preparing my 2015 CPD list and statement for revalidation I’ve been looking back over my professional goals for 2015, and am pleased to note that I didn’t actually do too badly at achieving them. (I also managed to log over 120 hours of CPD activities, and I’m quite sure that isn’t actually the full total – no wonder I never seem to have any free time!) Continue reading

Webinar: Communicating through infographics

Back on July 10th I listened to a very informative webinar, Communicating through infographics. Hosted by SLA’s DC Chapter and presented by Duke University’s Dr Christa Kelleher, the session provided an overview of recommendations and potential pitfalls for creating infographics. Looking back over my notes all these weeks later they seem rather stream-of-consciousness, so I’m almost reluctant to write them up in case I make the webinar sound a lot less coherent than it actually was! However, I’m moving house soon and I don’t want to risk losing them (they make sense to me!), so here goes…

My #SLA2014 schedule

I don’t imagine this will be of tremendous interest to anyone other than myself, but I wanted to keep track of everything I attended at the conference and this seemed like the easiest way. I am blogging separately about some of the sessions in more detail (links below), but otherwise a few brief notes will suffice.

Even though it has been almost two weeks since SLA’s 2014 conference ended I’m still trying to process my thoughts about it all. In the hope that writing something down about it might help, here are the top 10 impressions I took away from Vancouver.

CPD 2013

I’ve just been adding my 2013 CPD activities to my portfolio space on the CILIP VLE, and I was pleased to note that I racked up 37 hours. This doesn’t take into account a couple of events which I didn’t write up and don’t remember enough about now; at least 4 hours reading ILIG Focus and 12 hours reading Update, which I didn’t log (though I may this year); plus easily another 20+ hours (also not logged) of SLA committee meetings and associated tasks – and I thought it had been a fairly quiet year on the CPD front! What is your social style? I attended a very interesting event recently in which we were asked to assess our own styles and then look at how that affects our interaction with others. Continue reading
