Candidate for SLA Board

I have been shockingly slow in blogging about this, I think in part because I’m still trying to get my head around it: this year I am running as one of the candidates for SLA’s Board of Directors. If elected, I will serve the Chapter Cabinet for three consecutive years, as Chair-Elect, Chair, and Past-Chair respectively. Continue reading

#SLA2016 takeaways

SLA 2016 was an excellent conference. My experience was a little different this year as I was wearing several different hats: an attendee, a chapter president and a board candidate. I’ll blog about the latter separately, but here I wanted to capture some of the things which resonated most strongly with me as an attendee (and, perhaps coincidentally, as a leader).

For a conference which didn’t have explicit themes or tracks, it was remarkable how the same points kept appearing in different contexts. The two which I encountered most frequently were ‘understanding yourself’ and ‘learning is leading’. Continue reading

A Janus moment

In preparing my 2015 CPD list and statement for revalidation I’ve been looking back over my professional goals for 2015, and am pleased to note that I didn’t actually do too badly at achieving them. (I also managed to log over 120 hours of CPD activities, and I’m quite sure that isn’t actually the full total – no wonder I never seem to have any free time!) Continue reading

Castles in the sand

Our theme in SLA New York this year has to do with using the chapter as your sandbox, eg. a safe environment in which to experiment in order to gain new skills and experiences. For the latest edition of the chapter ezine, B2E, the editorial team put a call out for articles which touched on this theme, and I thought I might contribute something. On reflection, it occurred to me that without really thinking about it in these terms I’ve been using SLA NY as my sandbox ever since I joined the chapter, so I took this as my theme for the piece. (I’ve reposted the full text below, but you can find the original piece on the B2E site at this link). Continue reading

Chatting about Chartership

Last night I tuned into twitter to take part in the 2nd #chartership chat. As for the inaugural session, @joeyanne set up an online archive for all the tweets, so whilst I’ll try to summarise the main points here do take a look if you’re interested to see everything that came up. Scanning down the list, I think we managed around 216 tweets during the hour – not as impressive as last time but still not bad! Continue reading

Thing 21 – Promoting yourself

This Thing has really got me thinking. I’ve been in my current job for almost three years now, and things have changed somewhat since I started. I’ve also just finished working on a big project and the time is ripe for some reflection. I completely agree that it’s good practice to keep the CV up to date, and I’ve certainly got some work to do on mine, although I must say I’m not feeling the urge to move on just yet!
