It’s not often I find myself struggling for words, but I’m really not sure what to write about this year’s SLA conference, which is odd because I had an excellent time. Baltimore was my fifth consecutive attendance, so I have a lot of friends to catch up with, I’ve learned to enjoy chatting with our exhibitors about their products, and being on SLA’s board of directors adds an extra dimension to it all. I’ve even got a bit better at self-care, at long last – I managed to eat a hot meal every day, and even took a little time out to get some much-needed sunshine and fresh air (you have no idea how much of an achievement this is for me…!).

SLA Leadership Symposium 2018

At last I’ve managed to find the time to write about our Leadership Symposium, which took place at the end of last month (January 28-30) in New Orleans. This was exciting to me for a number of reasons, not least of all being that it was my first visit to a city I’ve wanted to experience for ages (and I wrote about that side of it over on my other blog). However, the main source of delight was that this event has been absent from the SLA calendar since 2015, and it was a huge privilege to be a part of the team responsible for bringing it back. (I attended the event in 2015, and found it a tremendous experience, although I’m sad to discover that I appear to have neglected to write about it here.)

#SLA2016 takeaways

SLA 2016 was an excellent conference. My experience was a little different this year as I was wearing several different hats: an attendee, a chapter president and a board candidate. I’ll blog about the latter separately, but here I wanted to capture some of the things which resonated most strongly with me as an attendee (and, perhaps coincidentally, as a leader).

For a conference which didn’t have explicit themes or tracks, it was remarkable how the same points kept appearing in different contexts. The two which I encountered most frequently were ‘understanding yourself’ and ‘learning is leading’. Continue reading

Webinar: understanding behavior

Continuing my current bad habit of not writing things up until weeks later, here are my notes from a webinar on July 16th. Entitled Understanding behavior – the critical link to leadership success, this was presented by consultant and behavioural psychologist Dr John Austin.

I was interested in this session for a couple of reasons – I’m always looking for new insights into effective leadership strategies, and I wanted to hear about this from an American perspective as I’m forever coming across things which are a little different over here. I’m not sure that I learned anything entirely new, but it was well-timed to make me re-evaluate some of my own behaviours, and there were some clear take-aways to bear in mind for future application.
