Thinking about change management

Isn’t it interesting how things bounce off each other? Or, more specifically, when something you’re thinking about causes you to notice other instances of that same thing all over the place? (I have a feeling there’s actually a term to define it, but I don’t remember what it is – let me know if you do!) Continue reading

Thing 22 – Volunteering

I volunteered in a charity shop one summer during my undergraduate degree which served to fill up some time in a useful way (I had a paid job too but that was evening bar work, so I had plenty of time to spare and no money to do anything interesting with it!). I enjoyed my time there but I didn’t gain a huge amount of new experience, and it only featured on my CV briefly. As far as I can remember the shop manager was paid but the rest of the staff were all volunteers. Library-wise, although I never did this myself I’m sure that relevant volunteering can be a useful way to get experience at the start of a career, especially if you’re not 100% sure if the job is for you. Thing 21 – Promoting yourself

This Thing has really got me thinking. I’ve been in my current job for almost three years now, and things have changed somewhat since I started. I’ve also just finished working on a big project and the time is ripe for some reflection. I completely agree that it’s good practice to keep the CV up to date, and I’ve certainly got some work to do on mine, although I must say I’m not feeling the urge to move on just yet! Thing 20 – Library routes

I’ve blogged about this at length elsewhere, so please read that post if you’re interested. I don’t believe there is a ‘typical’ route into librarianship, and my current role resists pigeonholing too, but I’m very happy to answer specific questions about any of my experience so far so please get in touch if there’s anything you’d like to know more about.

Thing 19 – Reflection again

Hmm, overall I’ve been a bit of a CPD23 failure so far. I’m still using things which I already used when the course began, and along the way I’ve earmarked a few things I would like to try out when a suitable moment presents itself. As I said right back at the start, I was expecting this to be a really busy few months for me, and in fact it was even more manic than I’d anticipated. It’s calming down a bit now, but I’ve still got heaps to do. This has meant that all sorts of things have had to fall by the wayside, and when I’ve had to cut back on time spent with my husband, family and close friends I refuse to beat myself up for not hanging out on Twitter enough. Thing 18 – screencapture and podcasts

Jing is something which I’d never heard of until this Thing, and it looks like a really useful tool. I do occasionally write how-to guides and this looks like a much better way of doing it that the screengrabs-in-Word-doc approach I usually employ. Next time I need to put something like this together I must remember to try it out. Continue reading

Thing 17 – Prezi and Slideshare

I would love to learn how to use Prezi. I’ve seen some great examples in action and am massively envious. Continue reading

Thing 16 – Advocacy

Part of my job is promoting our library services and events, both internally and externally. I sometimes joke that I’m more a marketing consultant than a librarian, which isn’t what I signed up for but actually I really enjoy the promotional aspect of my work – it’s challenging and I’m always learning about how to do it better, but at the end of the day I find it easy to enthuse about something which I believe in so it’s really just a question of channeling that in the most effective and appropriate ways. On a broader level, I think Tina & Jennie have said it all already, so I’ll cheat and direct you to their blogs rather than rehash it here.

Thing 15 – attending, presenting, organising

I love attending events, and go to as many as I can. As I’m based in London there are more events going on than I have the time to attend, many of which are free or low-cost (and yes, I realise I’m extremely lucky). Continue reading
