Libraries, the universe and everything

Alaskan public libraries

Whenever I travel I almost invariably spot a library or two along the way, either by accident or design. On a recent trip to Alaska I spotted three public libraries, and was fascinated by all of them in turn.

Haines library had a totem pole outside, which is a new one for me, and a beautifully-lit and cosy interior. It looked like a fairly small collection of books, with a sizeable booksale in the entrance suggesting they’d been busy weeding. We popped in to use their wifi, and the password was “librariesrock” which further endeared them to me.

Juneau is the state capital of Alaska, so I might have expected something a little grander from their city library than something constructed around a public car park. We went past early in the morning so it wasn’t open for us to take a look inside. At least I suppose it’s convenient to get to, whatever the weather!

And finally, Ketchican. This is probably the most spectacular setting for a library I’ve come across so far – sadly we didn’t go inside this one either but I imagine it was lovely.
