On twitter a little earlier today the ever-brilliant Helen Murphy coined the expression #chapowrimo, or Chartership Portfolio Writing Month. Based on the daily commitment to producing a certain wordcount espoused by participants in NaNoWriMo, this idea leapt off the screen at me as a great way to overcome my portfolio-finishing block.

Some discussion then followed about how this would work for Chartership purposes, with daily wordcounts and time allocations being the main ideas proposed. Given that I’m at the draft-refining stage, producing a set wordcount isn’t a sensible target for me, but I can see that it would really help if I was just starting out. Someone (I think it was Helen) suggested working for 30 minutes on an almost daily basis, and that seemed the best way for me to proceed:

commitment to chapowrimo targets

(I’ve just created a quick storify of the #chapowrimo tweets so far, not sure it’s picked everything up but it captures the general idea.)

In the preceeding #chartership chat, several of us agreed that having external pressure was much more motivating than self-administered nagging, and I have subsequently acquired a whole bunch of volunteers to bug me to get on with it. With all this in mind, I thought it would be helpful to commit to something tangible, both so I had a target to work to and to provide a stick for them all to beat me with if I failed! So:

Beginning on Monday 29th October I will spend at least 30 minutes each weekday working on my portfolio. I shall keep a note of my progress and also tweet about it each day using the #chapowrimo tag.

Caveats: If I need to miss a day for some reason I have to make the time up. Hopefully it won’t take me until the end of November to finish, so if I get to the point of sending it all to my mentor for comments I get to stop until she replies. And obviously I’m stopping at the point we agree that it’s finished! Also, naggers please remember that I’m in New York and therefore won’t be doing anything during mornings UK time – though switching on the computer to find a reminder or two might help 🙂

I’m in! My aim is to do 30 minutes a day. Today I’ve done an hour (the first 30 minutes were so satisfying I set the timer for another 30) of sorting out old paperwork.

Hooray! And good luck 🙂 I’ve slipped a bit over the last couple of days as we have friends staying and I’ve been out and about with them, but will be back at it with a vengeance next week once they’ve gone.
